Battery Life
I've been using my rocbox for about a month and a half and it doesn't seem like the battery life is 15 hours long like the company says. So one day I set down my fully charged rocbox and hit play with no headphones plugged in, and I timed the battery life. I was disappointed to find out that it only lasted 5 hours and 23 minutes! Has anyone else timed their battery life?

I noticed it too. ALthough I didn't time it out like you did, it did seem much shorter than advertised. I would be listening at work for about 3-4 hours (off and on), and the battery would be at half left. So, you figure 4 hours for each half, would only come out to about 8 hours at the best case scenario. That was just another reason why I returned it, and went for a Rio Karma.
I read somewhere that the way these companies test the battery life is to turn the volume all the way down, use a very low bit rate mp3 (like 64 kbps), use an extremely long mp3 (so it never changes songs - limits hard drive access), and turn the equalizer off or to flat. When I get some time I am going to try this method of testing before I decide to send it back to them and have them swap out the battery. I did call them about it and they did say that 5 hours seemed unusually short to them.
My battery life is crap too.

battery life on all these new portaple devices are about the same, the thing to remember is that all recharcable batterys have a memory chip in side of them, when you charge your battery the level is recorded and then a charge is applied until filled to capacity, if you charge your battery when it is not fully drained the chip precieves a half full battery as empty and only charges it half way. although it will display fully charged. best advice for any rechargable battery is not to charge until it is completly drained.
well, this is indeed the only thing that bugs me. it rarely lasts more that 5 hours, and i always charge it only when completely drained and i try too keep the volume not too high (say 15), and the light is set to "2 seconds". plus, i don't jump here and there very often as i like to listen to complete albums.
i'm wandering if the firmware upgrade, with its volume enhancement, has lowered battery life..
I rig an old sharp camcorder battery (6V 1200ah) to the rocbox charger connector. IT WORKS! Be carefull about the polarity! It is tip negative. I have not timed it yet. I can email the pictures to knighthawk if you like. Also the PSP charger works with Rocbox w/c means that you can also use PSP external battery (5V) that retail for $19.95 @ Bestbuy to power your Rockbox.

I would like to have the pictures of the battery extender system as well. I found that lately, I've been getting only about 3 or 4 hours of play time and after charging, removing from the charger and then plugging back in, I get another charge session of about a half hour or more. I recieved a 20 gb rocbox for free because it was new but it didnt power up..the usb port to charge wasnt there it was loose and it fell inside so i opened up the rocbox and I see it WAS connect to 4 prongs so I put the chrome usb port back and held it in place and plugged the charger in and it worked for like a minute of charge because I was holding it it powers up now but says low battery..um is there any other charger I can use to charge the battery like I see some sort of port at the bottom of the roc box
I use my Rocbox when riding my motorcycle about once a week. I usually get 8 to 10 hours out of it when fully charged. It's also hooked up to a Chatterbox that I use as an amp and is in direct sunlight all day. I have not utilized it longer than that.

3. PUT ALL THE SONGS U WANT TO PUT IN THE ROCBOX INTO THE WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER OR IF U R USING LIMEWIRE JUS GO TO LIBRARY THEN GO TO SHARED FILES CLICK CONFIGURE AND ADD C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player
4. PUT THE ROCBOX TO THE COMPUTER N GO TO WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER N CLICK THE ROCBOX- THEN U CLICK START SYNC ITS A BUTTON ON THE RIGHT ALL THE SONGS WILL SYNC TO THE ROCBOX.
5. AFTER, GO TO MY COMPUTER N OPEN THE ROCBOX THEN OPEN THE SYSTEM FILE THEN OPEN THE MUSIC FILE LEAVE IT OPEN THEN GO TO WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER'S LIBRARY AND HIGHLIGHT THE SONGS IN THE LIBRARY N DRAG THE SONGS TO THE MUSIC FILE.
6. LASTLY U GO TO THE UTILITY UPDATE AND CLICK THE RECOVER BUTTON AFTER RECOVERING. U WILL SEE A HARDWARE ICON AT THE BUTTON RIGHT OF THE COMPUTER *WHERE THE CLOCK IS AT* CLICK IT N STOP THE USB MASS STORAGE. AFTER U REMOVE UR USB CABLE FROM THE COMPUTER N UR ROCBOX IS READY!!!
