"The server threw an exception"
So I had not done a sync in a few weeks and I thought it was time to delete some of the music I did not want on my rocbox anymore. When I tried to sync with Windows Media Player 10 or try to delete music under the Sync tab, my PC would peg for about 15 minutes and then WMP came back and said "The server threw an exception".

Well, I talked to the customer service and they suggested I re-install the utility (their solution to everything). I even tried rolling back WMP and reinstalling version 10. I tried it all. I finally figured it out, somehow the databases that point to the music were fragged. So I opened the utility program and clicked the "Recover" button, which rebuilds the databases on the rocbox, and like magic it worked again!!
I had the same Problem. I was very frustrated not being able to delete files on rocbox. Customer service wanted me to send rocbox back to fix and I would loose my music I already put on rocbox. I followed your lead and clicked the "Recover" button and like magic it works great. THANK YOU,THANK YOU, THANK YOU.
Thanks very much for this. I had similar problems. I have approx 40Gb of music files on pc and tried to sync a selection aprox 12Gb. The battery ran out part way through and tere was no easy way of telling which files had gone over (have seen other comments re library display order!). Tried to delete all and start again and hit these problems. My advice would be to delete in very small chunks otherwise the problems recur. Buffering/controller issue? I assume wmp is creating temp files on the pc hard drive for this operation and there's a conflict somewhere. I haven't the knowledge to delve further.
Oh snap, whoops. I had this problem last night and spent hours on fixing it. Tried recovery, tried updates, everything! Had another RocBox and tried to copy the files over from that one. Still nothing. Finally said screw it, returned it and exhanged it for a new one. I just bought 2 of them from Macy's a week ago for $85. One works flawlessly, other.... well flaws.

JUS SIX STEPS: =
1. DOWNLOAD OR UPDATE WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER TO WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER 11 BETA-THIS THE WEBSITE FOR THEDOWNLOAD=http://www.microsoft.com/windows
/windowsmedia/player/11/default.aspx
2. INSTALL THE ROCBOX CD- MAKE SURE U HAV THE UTILITY UPDATE
3. PUT ALL THE SONGS U WANT TO PUT IN THE ROCBOX INTO THE WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER OR IF U R USING LIMEWIRE JUS GO TO LIBRARY THEN GO TO SHARED FILES CLICK CONFIGURE AND ADD C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player
4. PUT THE ROCBOX TO THE COMPUTER N GO TO WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER N CLICK THE ROCBOX- THEN U CLICK START SYNC ITS A BUTTON ON THE RIGHT ALL THE SONGS WILL SYNC TO THE ROCBOX.
5. AFTER, GO TO MY COMPUTER N OPEN THE ROCBOX THEN OPEN THE SYSTEM FILE THEN OPEN THE MUSIC FILE LEAVE IT OPEN THEN GO TO WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER'S LIBRARY AND HIGHLIGHT THE SONGS IN THE LIBRARY N DRAG THE SONGS TO THE MUSIC FILE.
6. LASTLY U GO TO THE UTILITY UPDATE AND CLICK THE RECOVER BUTTON AFTER RECOVERING. U WILL SEE A HARDWARE ICON AT THE BUTTON RIGHT OF THE COMPUTER *WHERE THE CLOCK IS AT* CLICK IT N STOP THE USB MASS STORAGE. AFTER U REMOVE UR USB CABLE FROM THE COMPUTER N UR ROCBOX IS READY!!!

Dude, Im thinking of getting one of these for christmas but the one im looking to buy has a problem: you turn it on and it says "operating system not found" how would you fix that?
Well.... i got a different rocbox, i now own one. however it came with the upload cord the headphones and the rocbox, no software. IM LOST. ive tried using windows media player sync and it gets onto the hard drive alright, but it wont show up on the actual rocbox. so my questions are this:
1. does anybody know anywhere where i could buy or download the utility update?
2. would the 128 rocbox software work with the 20 gig?

Mine does the same thing, and I have no idea how to fix it. For awhile I could just hit the thing a few times and it would come back on.. but not anymore.
I purchased the 20gb rocbox with utility disk and all. My problem is that once the sync process is complete thru wmp 11. Once I disconnect the rocbox from the computer no music is showing on the rocbox. But when I connect to the computer again the music is there and playing via the computer.
Please help me before I send this thing back.
