Firmware
Near as I can tell the rocbox uses the PortalPlayer PP5020 chipset, it's like an "all-in-one" chip. The iPods use this chip too. I've tried to decode the database for this thing so we can all stop using WMP and move to a much better winamp plugin or similar, but no luck. I have also tried to get into the firmware, there are many features that I would like to improve. I have emailed support to find out if the firmware is open source, so we can start improving on it. I'll post a comment when they email me back.

Like you, I bought this player at CompUSA a few weeks ago (the price was right), but have been disappointed by the lack of information surrounding it. It seems to be an orphan. Your blog is a good start.

No, the Roc Box can not use open source firmware, the only upgrades to the firmware will be on the Roc Digital website and although there is not that much that they have improved upon lately, in the future there will be more upgrades for the Roc Box.

Is it just my RocBox or do they all power up at their default menu? I like to listen to audio books and that's a bad feature.
They all do that. I asked the company if the rocbox has bookmarks for audio books, they said no. I also asked them if it was normal for the now playing song to reset after you power cycle it, they said yes. We can only hope they come out with a new version of firmware with these features. Maybe if they get enough complaints they will...

yo roc box sucks... they need to come out w/ some firmware updates... evrytime u delete something from the rocbox..the computer freezes for so longg.. and u will find that after ur rocbox has a decent amount of music on it, 10gb or so, that after it syncs 100% of ur playlist WMP just freezes on u.. Transfer is so slow compared to the ipod.. The ipod uses USB 2.0 also but it goes much faster.. An album can tranfer in less than 30 seconds for an ipod ..its incredible..Sadly my rocbox was a waste of money.. :(
The lack of information about this product is sad, but even worse is the pathetic UI. The missing features are totally unacceptable.
For example, where is real playlist support?
To assist the Rocbox folks to either expedite some badly needed firmware enhancements or publish the database format, I will be posting very low reviews on as many sites as I can find. I urge all of you to do the same.
It appears to me that "firmware" is not really firmware at all. I had the same problem totally deleting music. I found that I could look at the hard drive on the rocbox through MS explorer on the computer. I simply deleted all of the folders (you have set options for folder viewing in explorer's tools menu in order to see the "system" folder). Once I deleted all of the folders, the rocbox said there was no operating system.
I then ran the rocbox updater and used the reinstall option. The entire software was reinstalled with NO music or play lists.
This all makes me think that we might be able to load someone else's software onto the rocbox. I tried using the Ipod updater, but alas, it appears to recognize that the rocbox is not an ipod.
Maybe someone has a hack to fool the Ipod updater. Maybe someone else's software written for an Ipod will work.
The Philips HDD100 MP3 player uses a firmware with the same extension as rocbox's firmware (.mi4). You can download the file (philips.mi4) from here http://kvota.net/hacks/philips-hdd100/ and try to load it on the rocbox. I have not tried it yet, if you do, let me know how it goes. There are also python scripts available which are supposed to generate the index files in the /system/data directory, but they probably need a little tweaking to work just right on the rocbox...
so this thing only displays ID3 tags in english?
I got this at Macy's also for $85. Nice price for 20gigs and I'm not that big of a music freak.

Just tried to install the virgin firmware in 2 different ways but neither worked.
Cleared the Rocbox via windows explorer then simply tried to run the virgin install program - didn't recognise device - sat on "waiting for device to be connected screen".
Next tried renaming the mi4 file in the backup folder of Roc installation files to .bak, copied in virgin .mi4 file and run reinstall and/or recover options on roc update menu. Got success message and file shows in folder on rocbox drive........but........unplug sync cable and get "operating system not found!"
No joy there then.
. How do I create a playlist?
A. Individual playlists can be created on the rocbox without being connected to a computer. A “current playlist” must first be created. To do so, choose the desired songs from the “music library” list by pressing in on the toggle for a few seconds. From the main menu, select “current playlist” and press in on the toggle to save this list to “my playlists”. For further instructions, consult the rocbox user manual available on-line at www.roc-digital.com.
Q. Why can’t I view any music in my playlists?
A. Either a playlist has not been created or an already created playlist has been deleted. To create a playlist, simply add the songs you wish to the CURRENT PLAYLIST, and press down for a few seconds on the toggle to save this list to MY PLAYLISTS.
This looks intriguing. I have been learning much about Linux lately, I installed Debian on my laptop not to long ago. Having Linux installed is required to load linux on the rocbox/ipod. I wonder how you sync music once linux is running on the rocbox, because you wouldn't be able to use windows any more since the rocbox would have a linux filesystem... One could definately load uCLinux on the rocbox, it supports the ARM7TDMI microprocessor. The question is whether the UI (podzilla) would work or not.
It's not possible to transfer the songs manually from your hard drive to your rocbox yet. I think there are a couple of people working on a program to do this. One way you can check to see if the songs transferred is to look in the \system\music folder on your rocbox, if you see mp3 files there, then try using the "recover" feature of the rocbxo utility you should've installed.
The system folder is hidden, you need to turn on "show hidden files/folders" in your windows folder settings. I don't know how to format it, unless you format like a regular disk and then use the "reinstall" option in the utility program to get the OS back on it...
If you want to try the Virgin VM0500 (PP5020 based) on your RocBox just copy the Virgin firmware file PP5020.MI4 to the system folder on you RocBox drive. If it's not the same file name, just rename it to make it the same. The System folder on the RocBox will be hidden. I have the Virgin player and it has a reset hole on the side so if I put a bad MI4 file in the System folder I can press the button with a paper clip and I'm back to file mode to be able to copy over a good one. I'm trying to get a copy of the Phillips MI4 (model HDD077/17) file to try on my Virgin player. BTW the Virgin player has a smaller LCD screen size than the RocBox or Phillips so I might see things truncated whereas you shouldn't.

On my Virgin player having done the same thing if I plug it in, it will show up like a hard drive. I simply create a "SYSTEM" folder (you should make it hidden) on that drive using whatever file manager you use and copy into that "SYSTEM" folder the PP5020.MI4 (yours might be named something else) file. Once I reset the MP3 player it works just fine again. Then you should be able to use your sync software to copy over your music files again and all the other required directoris should be created by both the player and the syncronization process.
Now if you can't do this becuase you don't have a copy of the whatever.MI4 firmware file then when you recconect the player you should be able to do a firmware upgrade with lets say RocBox firmware upgrade software which you can download from their site. That should fix you up nicely also.
Remmeber there are two files which make the players work, the firmware file like "smonething.MI4" which is located on the hard drive and a bootloader program which is loacted in memory on your player.

Okay heres the deal i got fully working playlists and my files organized in folder in the rock box /System/MUSIC directory.
First Download the HDDTOOL Via
http://solonweb.free.fr/HDDTool.exe
After you download copy the program to the root directory of the roc box.
I found it best to copy all content to computer (arranged in folders that you wish to be playlists), i arranged mine in folders for Rock, Rap, Country, Etc.
Then delete all music and playlists from the rocbox
Launch Program
its will give you an error message
saying the file structure has been modified, click yes to tell it to repair.
Afterwards it will ask what type of player you have. Select "Bantam BA1000".
Then you will get another error, just ignore this one, it doesnt affect anything. Click okay.
Now it will search ur hard drive for music & playlists. Once its finished. Click on the settings menu...
select Auto create playlists
de-select any others in that menu.
Unless you dont want your music stored in folders in the music directory. if thats the case select
no sub dirs
Now you can click and drag your files from your computer onto that window and the HDDTOOL software will copy the music and create your playlists.
Once you finished copying files
Click quit, click yes.
Now run your "roc box utility update" program that came with your rocbox. Click on recover, then click yes. this will correct your database files.
Now play and enjoy.

I am having one heck of a terror time with my Rocbox. I bought this thing off of eBay, plugged the side-cable in and it takes forever to detect then finally locks my system up. I dunno if the player is burned out or the synce cable is bad or maybe i should have one for the bottom.

I think the rocbox is a great mp3 player aswell. For all you guys who say "Oh, well I bought the rocbox on ebay and this does't work and this isn't functioning. This that and the third", maybe it isn't workink due to the previous owner. But, I bet you never thought of that. I have had the rocbox for several moths and it has not given me any type of problems, but then again I bought it For $400 at rocdigital.(basically it is offical. No trading off ebay, no buying it at Macy's for $300 cheaper.) When you are cheap and do not want to pay full price for a product you end up with a messed up product.
And for al of you guys talking shit about the rocbox I don't see your attempting to make a better mp3 player. Setting up this blog is a real big time waste of time and I am only writting to let the future owners f a rocbox know that you guys are all haters.

Looking for firmware upgrade software now that the Rocbox site is down for good. Anyone have it or know where to get it?
Can Anyone give me the firmware?, I really wish I had seen this before. Had I known the stupid website was down for good...... maybe because they were tired of us bitch'n how bad the rocbox is. I currently have my second rocbox which my father gave me ( He had bought 2) cause the last one kept missing the damn operating system unexpectly, right in the middle of me listening to it!!! anyway I wanted to clear my songs again becasue they were unorganized because I was afraid to formate it to put my songs in it and take out his. anyway I had previously lost the cd , thankfully he didn't so I thought all would be fine. I copied all my songs into windows media after figuring out the "system" folder was hidden- what a damn bitch!!!! but then come to found out the firmware is not on the actual disk------ I'm sorry but does this make any kind of fucking sense to anybody?
My rocbox (purchased in March 2005) does not work anymore. Initially, a couple of times it gave a message "operating system not found" and shut down. Then turning it on again, it will work fine. Now, after showing the rocbox logo for about thirty seconds or so it simply shuts down. Any help to fix it will be greatly appreciated.

This is absolutely weird because my rocbox just did the same thing last night. At first I notice all of the songs were not on the mp3 player anymore. Everytime I checked it said "No Title." After a couple of turning it on and off, it said no operating system. Then I woke up it had the songs listed but then I checked it again, there where "No Title" again. This time the battery was low. After trying to recharge it, I got the "operating system not found."
What is going on? It must be some massive electronically shut down of a MP3 device. DANG, it was working beautifully and now this. I have a warranty for it, so maybe they can fix it. I hope.

I recently uploaded the firmware for rocbox owners. I have owned my rocbox for over 6 months and for some strange reason it is working fine after a couple of resets and recover using the utility app. after a month or so it was awful but after working the bigs out of it; I use it daily with no problems yet. here are the setup & firmware, I hope this helps you fellow rocbox owners out.

2. INSTALL THE ROCBOX CD- MAKE SURE U HAV THE UTILITY UPDATE
3. PUT ALL THE SONGS U WANT TO PUT IN THE ROCBOX INTO THE WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER OR IF U R USING LIMEWIRE JUS GO TO LIBRARY THEN GO TO SHARED FILES CLICK CONFIGURE AND ADD C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player
4. PUT THE ROCBOX TO THE COMPUTER N GO TO WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER N CLICK THE ROCBOX- THEN U CLICK START SYNC ITS A BUTTON ON THE RIGHT ALL THE SONGS WILL SYNC TO THE ROCBOX.
5. AFTER, GO TO MY COMPUTER N OPEN THE ROCBOX THEN OPEN THE SYSTEM FILE THEN OPEN THE MUSIC FILE LEAVE IT OPEN THEN GO TO WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER'S LIBRARY AND HIGHLIGHT THE SONGS IN THE LIBRARY N DRAG THE SONGS TO THE MUSIC FILE.
6. LASTLY U GO TO THE UTILITY UPDATE AND CLICK THE RECOVER BUTTON AFTER RECOVERING. U WILL SEE A HARDWARE ICON AT THE BUTTON RIGHT OF THE COMPUTER *WHERE THE CLOCK IS AT* CLICK IT N STOP THE USB MASS STORAGE. AFTER U REMOVE UR USB CABLE FROM THE COMPUTER N UR ROCBOX IS READY!!!

Hi, I have read through this blog a few times, and have tried all the suggestions, unfortunately, none of them solved my problem. I formatted the hard drive of my RocBox and now it is giving me the error saying "No Operating System found!". I tried with restoring/repairing in the firmware program, but fixed nothing. My rocbox has been saying that the operating system is not found, so i tried to reinstall the firmware from the rocbox Utility update, but it keeps on saying "Cannot copy file: The file name you specified is not valid or too long. Specify a different file name." I tried to reinstall the disc on the computer again, but it still doesn't work... Is the firmware somewhere on my computer? I'm just wondering if there's a way around this so I can get my rocbox working again.

I'm having issues with the Virgin Electronics 5MB and looking for some help. I've reformatted the drive, been able to sync with WMP but the mp3 player is not recognizing the music/songs. It gives me the error, no songs to play, but I can see them under drive:\system\music. Any ideas? I'm ready to throw this thing away.
P.S. Forgot to mention in the above comment. I did follow a lot of the steps above. Bantam tool is cool and copies the songs but still doesn't recognize it through that file copy. Any / All help appreciated as this blog has been great so far.
Hello I get the same problem i got the virgin software and i installed it and when i plug in my player i notis the player frezzes up at transfer screen and nothin like the delete and format buttons in wmp light up so i can clik them when i click on remove hard ware to remove it and push the button on teh player to disconect it it still frezzes on the transfer screen and i have to rest it with the reset button do i need somethin or is it broken lol or what???? ty:Hoodie = hoodified.studios@gmail.com

I copy the mp3 files in my player but the player can see the files. i understand to a friend is necessary to instal the program is in my player but the program is not work i read in the manual and is true without the program i can't transfer music in the player :
1. Double-click My Computer, and then double-click Virgin 5GB.
2.Double-click SETUP.EXE to install the music management software and User's Guide onto your PC's hard drive.
3.When the installation screen appears, click Forge On!
4.Stare hypnotically at the screen until the installation is done.
5.Click the Register button, fill out the info, and you’re good to go!

I finally pulled out my old roc box and started messing with it again. I was having problems due to a bad file or something. I erased all the music using Nautilus 2.20.0 (linux version of windows explorer). I then reset it using the little hole in the bottom. It still showed the songs I had deleted but wouldn't play them (as expected). I then deleted all the PP5000 files in the system Data folder.
I then loaded some new songs in wma and mp3 formats into the music folder. Upon restsart, the rebuilding database message was displayed. The rocbox only recognised the wma format songs. It played them well. I'm still looking ofr a way to get the rocbox to recognise the mp3 format files. I'm pretty sure that it played them before.
