Hardware

As with any new gadget I purchase, I can't help but to know everything there is to know about it! So let's take the rocbox apart! View this post to see illustrated detail of the 20GB rocbox model 14003.

First, turn the rocbox over. Use a plastic shim tool (I used a plastic putty knife from Home Depot) to wedge in between the casing, starting with the bottom end of the rocbox.

There are several clips around all of the edges that you are trying to release with the shim tool. It is a little frustrating and took me some time, but I finally got it.

After you gently remove the rubber housing from around the Hitachi hard drive, you get a good view of it. It is a Hitachi Travelstar Model: HTC424020F7AT00, here is the datasheet.

Next, the battery. The only thing the battery says on it is ABC4B20619511111.

Here you can see the printed circuit board (PCB). Notice the PortalPlayer chip in the right center. It says PP5020D-TF on it, here is the datasheet. The chip right below that is the RAM, underneath the label it reads HY57V561620CT-H. Here is the datasheet. This player uses the ARM7TDMI microprocessor, here is the datasheet. I think this chip is to be found on the other side of the PCB, I did not want to remove the screws and flip it over in fear of getting dust under the LCD.

Good job. I just love taking things apart, but I guess it's getting them back together that's the real satisfying part. Thanks for the inside view.

I can't figure out how to get playlists onto my rocbox. I'm not too familiar with WMP 9 but I have a couple different playlists which all end up in the Music Library. Any advice as how to properly setup these playlists?
Thanks

At 7/15/2005 2:53 PM, Blogger John Manning said...

I haven't been able to transfer playlists either. I don't think you can. I think the only playlists that the rocbox supports are the ones you create on the device itself and cannot transfer to/from the PC.

Can anyone pointout what the pinouts are for the bottom connector? I've heard of people using ipaq connectors to charge this thing. Is this true?

see www.misticriver.net or www.rockbox.org fopr more info. you can transfer playlists to your h120 but they have to be *.m3u files.

has anyone heard anything ab the Roc coming out with a newer, smaller version of the 20GB? i just went to CompUSA last week to buy a rocbox, but they told me they weren't selling them anymore, that they practically gave away all the ones they had a few months ago (damnit!) and that they were waiting for the new one out in 'a couple of weeks.' that's all the details he had. i hope this is true, or that there are still the reg ones somewhere out there, bc i really want one. anyone heard anything at all?

There is supposed to be a rocbox 2 coming out, but no one knows specifics. See http://www.engadget.com/entry/1234000693037532/. I think they should focus on more firmware updates than another player!

Can someone help with finding a car charger for this thing? Since the battery only lasts about 6 hours, it would be nice.

At 8/24/2005 12:41 PM, Blogger John Manning said...

I bought one of thos $5.99 universal car lighter adapters at Fry's. It plugs into your cigarette lighter port and has a variable voltage setting with about 6 different tips on the other end. I use it with the charger tip that came with the rocbox charger and it works great!

mp3 is the latest and the most popular audio format that is used now. This acronym stands for MPEG layer 3. It is a compressed audio format with a compression rate of up to 12:1. The sound quality of the audio in this format is very high.

My Rocbox has stopped playing sound from one ear of my headphones.... and it is slowly getting harder to get sound from it at all. I am sure that my Headphones are alright as they work fine on other devices (Walkman, CD Player, etc) I really need to know how to fix this problem. Often, the sound comes out of the left side of the earphones if I twist and turn the wires a little... but then it stops coming out from the right side. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

D-Dash... "international man of Roc Box mystery" is about to introduce his latest product.

It's called the RocTalk. It is a mobile telephone for the "urban consumer." It will debut at Macy's for $499 this fall. Now, some of you haters may look at it and think "Hey, that's just a RocBox with a car radio antenna taped to it." That's because you aren't from the streets like Damon Dash, CEO Rockafella Records.

If Damon Dash says that a piece of crap MP3 player attached to a telescoping car antenna is a cell phone then, bitch, it damn well is. Because he's D-Dash and this is how he treats his "people."

It is expected that customers will also be able to turn their RocTalks into the long-awaited RocBox 2 by paying D-Dash to draw a "2" on the front with a Sharpie.

A speaker-phone feature will be accomplished by super-gluing a junkyard car speaker onto the front of the RocTalks.

Said Dash spokesman Mitchell Rose, "The possibilities are endless. Damon has so many great ideas. They transcend traditional limits of engineering or logic. Damon tells our engineers an idea, they tell him that it violates one of Newton's Rules, and then Damon goes ahead and makes it happen anyway. And who tells Damon "Roca" Dash no, anyhow? The man is a visionary. Oh yeah, because you got a PhDizzle in Electronic Engineering or some shit from CalTech, you think that makes you special or something? D-Dash stomps all you mother truckers. Oh, and unlike prior models, we plan to include functional batteries on this model. Please see stores for details."

More information will be available soon at roc-digital.com, when it is relaunced sometime before 2009. Holla back. Roc for life.

how can i delete songs on the rocbox? sounds so simple but i'm holding in the scroll bar and it just adding songs to a playlist! help!

At 9/28/2006 2:22 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

You know I can't help but ask either:
I have no idea how to get a playlist on this thing...*shakes head and looks around* I have the whole m3u thing...but how do I save it or where do I save it or what do I do so that the rocbox will recongnize the playlist?

At 9/28/2006 2:31 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

OH, as for the deleting thing: I have an answere.
connect the usb cable deal and then open the file in mycomputer and find the drive which rocbox will take up.
Then open it up (turn on the ability to see hidden and system files) and there will be a hidden folder called 'system' and in that there is a folder called music...all of your music is stored there and deleting it that way takes it off your rocbox...

Hi, I have read through this blog a few times, and have tried all the suggestions, unfortunately, none of them solved my problem. I formatted the hard drive of my RocBox and now it is giving me the error saying "No Operating System found!". I tried with restoring/repairing in the firmware program, but fixed nothing. Looks like I need a copy of the original firmware file. Can someone PLEASE email me a copy of it? I would really appreciated it!! Please help me to save my Rocbox. THANK YOU in advance.

hi,

I don't know if anyone is still answering questions here but I'll try. I got a free rockbox minus the travel charger, just the plug, I found some old chargers that fit the pin but it just blinks on and off and never charges. It works when its plugged in but when I pull out the charger it goes dead. I assume this means the battery is dead? I charged it for a seven or eight hours, overnight. Anyone have any advice? I used a couple of different chargers, 120v, 12v,5v

Connect it to your usb to the computer, Windows xp or above should detect it and charge it for you assuming that the battery life is not completely depleted.

This is from mwarnock55@yahoo.com.. Ok... listen all... this i have experienced all your frustrations with this device.. however.. i can say that i have conquered it.. just read what i say and you can use it for what it was DESIGNED for.. and thats windows media 9 PLAYER!! Yup.. what I said WMP 9!!! and only 9!! if you have WMP 10.. nope.. WMP 11.. even worse.. you gotta roll back to 9 to have a chance with this Klingon version of an IPOD.. But no worries I will help you figure it out... First.. roll back to previous version of WMP.. dont worry you can reinstall WMP 11.. but here's the thing.. once you roll back and add the songs.. well it builds the necessary files and folders that the rocbox wants.. so after this tutorial you will understand what i mean.. First go to control panel.. add/remove programs and click on WMP and choose to roll back to 9. After that go into 9 and add anything you want to it by using the copy to device tab under the libray tab. After your done adding the media then your done.. after all that if you decide you want more songs later just save yourself the hassle and plug in your rocbox.. got to my computer click on the rocbox drive and open it. then go to the top tabs and click the view tab.. click on show hidden files and folder as well as making sure the show system files is checked... then exit.. and you will see a system folder.. double click that and inside you will see the holy grail of this prehistoric machine.. the music folder.. double click that and you will see all the music.. now.. from now on.. fuck WMP.. just add your mp3 to this folder.. just make sure that you check that all the media tags are valid.. i.e. album.. title.. artist.. and genre.. hope this helps all you suffering sobs.. lol email if you have any questions of the previous mentioned.

I truly believe that we have reached the point where technology has become one with our society, and I think it is safe to say that we have passed the point of no return in our relationship with technology.

I don't mean this in a bad way, of course! Ethical concerns aside... I just hope that as memory gets cheaper, the possibility of transferring our brains onto a digital medium becomes a true reality. It's one of the things I really wish I could experience in my lifetime.
